The Electric Revolution

The automotive industry is continually changing and this has always been the case since the first car came into existence. However, advances in powertrain technologies have seen this rate of change accelerate at a pace the industry hasn’t seen before.

Petrol and diesel-engined vehicles have very much been the staple means of propulsion on Britain's roads for the best part of almost a century now, but as the world wakes up to its environmental obligations, this is slowly beginning to change.

We are now more environmentally aware than we have ever been and whilst we recycle where appropriate and are more conscious about leaving the lights on unnecessarily this chain of thought has slowly started to trickle into the mainstream motorist as drivers become more and more considered with their used car choices.

Over the last several years, alternatively fueled vehicles, be that a fully electric or a hybrid vehicle (a vehicle with a combination of a more traditional engine alongside an electric motor), have made up an increasingly growing market share.

Wind the clock back a mere handful of years and electric cars were struggling to gain any real traction. You could argue this was down to a few factors, lack of awareness around the benefits of electric vehicles or poor charging infrastructure across the country resulting in severely limited driving range unless local to a charging point. Add these points to an initial high purchase cost of the vehicle and unproven technology and it’s natural that mainstream pick up would be slow.

Fast forward back to the present day and a lot of those drawbacks have been eradicated. Better education around the benefits of electric vehicles, alongside government grants, is slowly starting to tap into drivers consciences. Charging infrastructure has also caught up with vehicle charging points springing up across the country at service stations and in cities and towns.

These factors have created a platform for stronger uptake, and as a result, technologies have become more proven and advanced through use. Motorists now also have a great deal of choice when it comes to vehicles to choose from as major manufacturers flock to deliver an electric car that becomes an everyday sight on our roads.

With the prospect of fast and wireless charging just around the corner, coupled with power and performance to worry any serious supercars, you have a very exciting future for the electric vehicle.
