  • Government announces ban on petrol and diesel cars from 2030

Earlier this week, the UK government announced its plans to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars as of 2030. The news comes as part of a wider green plan being rolled out by the government to tackle climate change.

Originally, the date to ban petrol and diesel cars was set for 2040, but the government has now backtracked on this, bringing the date forward by 10 years. At present, less than 1% of cars in the UK are powered by electricity, so there’s certainly a big hurdle to overcome in order to meet the target.

There’s plans for a huge amount of investment in the initiative, with the government announcing that £500 million will be invested in the development and production of electric vehicle batteries. On top of this, £582 million will be ring-fenced to help people afford electric vehicles.

As part of the government’s 10-point plan, point four highlights the advancement of electric vehicles, documented as: ‘Accelerating the transition to electric vehicles, and transforming infrastructure to support electric vehicles.’

However, there is a bit of relief for customers who may feel concerned about the cost of an electric or hybrid vehicle - the ban will affect new cars only. This means that used cars will remain unaffected, so you will still be able to buy petrol and diesel cars after 2030 if it is a used vehicle.
